Square Enix has cancelled the development of their GPS-based action RPG, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, for Android and iOS. First revealed in April 2022, the game held a prototype test in Japan in 2023, followed by a CBT in select regions. After delaying its planned 2024 launch, it is now shelved.
Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link won’t see the light of day, as its development has been shelved
For those new, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was a GPS-based action RPG set in the iconic Kingdom Hearts universe. It was being designed to connect the stories of KE’s Union X and Dark Road, offering you with a new narrative experience.
You could have explored the realm of Scala ad Caelum, using either GPS movement or by screen controls. It was a really ambitious project, which had been in development for a long time now. Unfortunately, this exciting title won’t get to see the light of the day.
The Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link dev team has announced that they’ve cancelled the development of the game via X (formerly known as Twitter), stating that despite their efforts, they felt it would be difficult to “offer a service that players will find satisfactory over a long period.“
The devs will continue working on Kingdom Hearts IV
I feel that it’s a sad end for a title that showed so much potential. However, amid the bad news, there’s something that will make you happy. The dev team confirmed that the Kingdom Hearts series is far from over, stating, “We are hard at work on KINGDOM HEARTS IV.“
That said, the fans of the franchise are showing mixed reactions; some are genuinely disappointed, others aren’t showing much sympathy. One Reddit user joked, “And nothing of value was lost,” while another stated, “These EoS speedrun are getting faster and faster,” which is pretty sad.
