Pokémon TCG Pocket aims for an overhaul this year, to boost long-term player retention

The team aims to boost retention through a better collection experience!

Story Highlights
  • DeNA’s Q1 2025 report noted a drop in long-term player retention compared to the game’s early years.
  • The team plans to roll out a major update later this year and are currently exploring various development options.
  • The game maintains 39 million monthly players, with most revenue from outside Japan.

DeNA has announced its plan for a major change for Pokémon TCG Pocket, aiming to address long-standing criticism about its card collection system. The community has been voicing frustration since launch, and this has also led to decreasing player retention, as seen in the recent fiscal report.

Pokémon TCG Pocket aims to boost player retention with a major Collection system overhaul

DeNA’s latest Q1 2025 financial report acknowledged that fewer existing players are now sticking to the game compared to its initial years. To counter this, the team is planning to roll out a significant update before the end of the year, designed to make collecting cards less frustrating and more rewarding.

DeNA added, “Initiatives to improve retention rate and login frequency, such as enhancing
the collection experience, are key objectives.
” While no specifics have been revealed, the community has started to speculate on possible changes, from a universal Pack Point system to a soft pity mechanic.

The game stays strong with 39M Players as it targets long-term engagement

That said, the game is still doing well, boasting an impressive 39 million monthly active users, with over half of its revenue coming from outside Japan. For a mobile TCG, these figures take the game to the top, placing it among the genre’s strongest performers.

That’s where this upcoming overhaul comes in, which is a great decision in my opinion. By tackling one of the game’s most criticized systems, DeNA now hopes to strengthen the game’s long-term engagement. We’re seeing something similar on Brawl Stars, with Masteries removed, increased F2P rewards, and more.
