Matajuegos, an Argentine indie studio, has launched its award-winning surrealist documentary game, Atuel, now available on Android and PC. Originally released on Itch.io in September 2022, this title was developed in collaboration with international documentary filmmakers, The 12.01 Project.

Explore beautiful landscapes and experience real-life stories

Atuel is a surrealist documentary adventure that takes you across dreamlike landscapes inspired by the real topography and wildlife of Argentina’s Cuyo Desert. You can explore these surreal environments while shapeshifting into various animals and elements that are part of the region’s ecosystem.

What makes this title special is its use of real-life testimonies. As you journey through the game, you’ll hear from locals and specialists, sharing about the region’s past, present, and future. It tells a better narrative about humanity’s connection to nature and the impact of climate change.

Experience a heartfelt adventure through nature and an ambient soundtrack

Now, I get why it has received so much praise, as they really deserve it. While it provides a strong message, it’s also great for people who love nature. You can enjoy a contemplative, audiovisual experience. The gameplay visuals give me the vibe of Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

All in all, the game is worth trying, offering stunning surrealist visuals rooted in real-world geography, real-life testimonies, soothing ambient soundtrack by musicians Makunouchi Bento, an impactful half-hour gameplay, and more. I’m surely trying it out later.

Atuel is now available on Android and PC. You can now download the game from the Google Play Store. Currently, there’s no information yet on the iOS launch. Stay tuned for more updates!
