In an unfortunate incident, a 14-year-old boy in the Lucknow region of India died by suicide after reportedly being scolded by his mother for playing mobile games late at night. The boy, a class 8 student, was found dead in his room shortly after the confrontation.

Routine scolding leads to a tragic incident over a mobile game

According to the India Today report, the incident happened in Sector G of the Ashiyana area in Lucknow, India. The boy was using his mobile device at night when his mother, Kumodini, reprimanded him for not focusing on his studies. This should have been a common parental concern, but became a tragedy.

Later that same night, the boy was found hanging on the ceiling fan in his room by his mother, and she reportedly fainted from this shock. What’s more sad is that the family, originally from Odisha, had only recently moved to Lucknow after the boy’s father, a CRPF officer, was transferred here in May.

This tragedy sparks broader concern around mobile gaming

The child was the middle sibling and studied at a private school in the city, while his elder brother lives with their grandparents back in Odisha. However, there are no formal allegations made by the family. The police have begun an investigation into the tragedy, but they’re yet to find any foul play.

That said, this is devastating and also showcases a trend where gaming, which is meant to be a fun escape, is ending up in tragedy. This shouldn’t be happening in today’s time, and parents should also focus on their children’s mental health.

I feel like this has become very common in India and around the world, showing how games like PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, and other titles often cause such tragedy at home. While the government may enforce more rules, I believe we need something more than that.
